General Guideline Principles for Overview of Occupational
Interstitial Lung Disease for workers compensation patients
The New York State workers compensation board has developed these guidelines to help physicians, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals provide appropriate treatment for Overview of Occupational Interstitial Lung Disease.
These Workers Compensation Board guidelines are intended to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions regarding the appropriate level of care for their patients with ankle and foot disorders.
The guidelines are not a substitute for clinical judgement or professional experience. The ultimate decision regarding care must be made by the patient in consultation with his or her healthcare provider.
Overview of Occupational Interstitial Lung Disease
Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) is one of the basic classifications for occupational lung disease, and work-related asthma is another (work-related asthma is covered in the NY Occupational Asthma/Work Related Asthma Medical Treatment Guideline).
This recommendation is meant to provide an evidence-based method for identifying and treating occupational interstitial lung diseases (ILD). The recommendation addresses both immunologically mediated illnesses like chronic beryllium disease (CBD) or hypersensitivity pneumonitis as well as diseases caused by inorganic dust, such as silicosis, asbestosis, and coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) (HP).
The foundation for diagnosis and treatment strategies is laid forth by the history of occupational exposure, the symptoms, and the findings of diagnostic and screening tests.
ILDs are a diverse group of over 100 disorders that induce lung parenchymal inflammation and/or scarring and are grouped together due to comparable clinical, roentgenographic, physiological, and/or pathologic characteristics. ILD refers to conditions that impact the lung interstitium. Edema and inflammation are the main symptoms of acute injury to the interstitium, whereas fibrosis—the final stage of chronic inflammation—characterizes chronic injury.
ILD, also known as “pulmonary fibrosis” or “interstitial fibrosis,” is a collection of chronic, typically irreversible disorders characterised by an active immunological and/or inflammatory response, excessive fibroblast activity, and the deposition of excessive amounts of collagen.
